Open-Cell Spray Foam

  • Texture: Soft and spongy

  • Cell Structure: Cells are open and not fully encapsulated, which allows air to fill them

  • R-Value: Around R-3.5 to R-4 per inch

  • Expansion: Expands a lot—up to 100x its size—great for filling hard-to-reach gaps

  • Soundproofing: Excellent due to its airy structure

  • Cost: Cheaper than closed-cell

  • Vapor Barrier: No — it’s breathable, which can be useful in some applications

  • Best For: Interior walls, attics, soundproofing projects

Closed-Cell Spray Foam

  • Texture: Rigid and dense

  • Cell Structure: Cells are closed and packed together, filled with gas that makes it a better insulator

  • R-Value: Around R-6 to R-7 per inch — much higher

  • Expansion: Expands less than open-cell

  • Structural Strength: Adds rigidity and strength to walls or surfaces

  • Cost: More expensive

  • Vapor Barrier: Yes — blocks moisture completely

  • Best For: Exterior walls, basements, crawl spaces, metal buildings, and areas with high moisture or weather exposure
